Holiday Inn

We give 4 paws up to the pet friendly Holiday Inn Express in Toronto where we stayed while in Toronto to attend Woofstock. This hotel was open to dogs, is located only a block from the festival directly next to beautiful St. Jame's Park, and was a great place for us and our dog to lay our heads after a busy day.

Woofstock

Each year over a hundred thousand dog lovers congregate at the largest dog festival in North America - Woofstock. This 2 day events takes place on Front street between Jarvis and Yonge and features vendors, fashion shows, dock dogs, agility demos and more. Sunday morning also has a huge fund raising walk bringing in much needed funds for a variety of participating rescue groups.

This is a fabulous event and we give it 4 paws up! Visit our photography site to see our shots from Woofstock!

Basset Hound Rescue

In addition to our Newfoundland Dogs, we also have a Basset Hound named Floyd, which ultimately led to our involvement with Basset Rescue. Our first dealings with the amazing folks at the Basset Hound Rescue of Ontario (BHRO) was last summer. It's a long story, but I'll try to keep it brief....

I heard that a woman who was breeding Basset Hounds was giving away an intact brood bitch, and I scrambled to get in contact with this woman before another Back-Yard-Breeder took the dog and continued using her as a puppy making machine. After chatting with the breeder I soon learned that she actually had 21 Basset Hounds, and after my initial visit with her I had convinced her to surrender 9 of them to the BHRO. Within days the 9 hounds had been spayed/neutered, given their shots, and put up for adoption.

I continued to stay in touch with this breeder over the next few months, gently pushing for her to close down her kennel and get out of breeding dogs. A few months passed and she finally agreed to surrender her remaining dogs to the BHRO. I contacted the rescue and let them know that the remaining dogs needed to be moved. Within a few days all of the dogs were vaccinated, transport had been arranged for 13 dogs, foster homes lined up, spay/neuter surgeries scheduled, and a contract put in place ensuring that this breeder would stop breeding dogs. Within a few short weeks every single one of these dogs ahd been adopted into loving families and are now enjoying life as house pets rather than kennel dogs.

The breeder has now totally changed her tune and is speaking out against back-yard-breeding, and actively working to encourage other BYB's to shut down their kennels. This is a true success story.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for all of the volunteers who run the Basset Hound Rescue of Ontario. They did an amazing job dealing with such a large influx of dogs, in their interactions with this breeder, and they are running a top notch rescue organiziation. This is truly the very best rescue group I have ever encountered and I highly recommend them. They are an excellent model for all rescue groups. 4 paws up!
